One night, I came home from the office, walked right past my family, and disappeared into my home office. I told myself I was building a better future. Providing. Protecting. But the truth was, I was hiding behind the hustle.
An hour in, one of my stepdaughters knocked on the door. “Can we bump the volleyball a little?”
“Absolutely,” I said. “Give me one hour.”
That hour turned into three. Then five. The sun went down. Dinner ended. The volleyball never left the floor. And I never showed up.
By the time I realized what I’d become, it was too late. The damage was done. The family I wanted most was gone. I lost my marriage. I lost the role of father. I lost myself. That was the moment I stopped making excuses and started telling the truth.
